SOCIETY OF ILLUSTRATORS Rich Tu please read!

I want you all to know this. Today I was at the society of illustrators in nyc for a talk with daniel fishel, john bartlett, rich tu etc. It was discussing the first years after graduating. It was a great talk and I especially had a good time talking to Tuesday and Rich. After talking for a bit Rich gived me his card and I give him an old one. He asks if the links are all current and I say yes. As I say this I realize mins later "wait... no they aren't! I have to up date them. Speedwalking like Oprah on speed I rush to the train station. "MUST UPDATE MUST UPDATE" were all the could be heard in my brain. After getting to the train and sitting down with a second to think, I realize that I could transfer pieces from my tumblr on to here. So hopefully Rich Tu is reading this, finds it hysterical and hires me. Or he scrolled passed the whole thing and he'll never read this. Either way it seems like one of those stories illustrators have. This is up there with my Sterling Hundley story.so

Minotaur

Minotaur piece work in progress

Friday, July 27, 2012

So I FINALLY got to start this master copy I've been trying to get too. Its taken so long to get to it but it was worth the wait. Right now I'm wait for this one to dry. I'll probably start working on it this week after I'm done working on the drawing and underpainting for the Batman piece I've been doing and the Velasquez master copy I just started today.

New pieces and sketches for my final

So this first one is the final for part 1 of my target marketing project in Illustration Methods with Mark Tocchet. I'm doing film production or concept art and wanted to do a retelling of Logan's Run. Want to read the book, saw the movie but I pretty much rewrote the whole story in a 3 page summary. I loved it :)

Part 1 is towards the end of the movie where Logan and Jessica run from Francis (in my story he is a robot/A.I. It shows the inside of a destroyed building while showing the city and dome they came from in the distance.

The rest are sketches for part 2, which is inside the dome at the beginning of the movie where Francis and Logan are friends. I learned a lot about lighting in theres two pictures. A lot of fun.

In class 1 day illustration

Today we came into class with our materials at 8am and found 50 assignment sheets on the board. We had to pick one and then draw up thumbnail sketches, get those approved and then move onto sketches, get those approved and then the final. That gave us 2-4 hours to work on the final. Mine was an article for Scifi magazine entitled "Cyborg". I used my friend vic as reference for the head and the rest from imagination. It was a lot of fun and definitely interesting. A lot of shortcuts and textures

Book cover and concept art!

This piece was for my illustration methods class. We had to pick a classic book and do a cover in our style, communicate the mood of the book and do it in a contemporary way. I love Paradise Lost. The epic story telling, the numerous themes and various character developmental aspects are some of the best I've ever read. This is what writing should be. For me, Lucifer is who I connect with the most (bring on the devil self portrait jokes now). Hubris, the idea that he is in fact equal to or greater than a god, the thought that he is so rebellious, arrogant, deluded, determined is not only relatable to me at least but some of the qualities in a sense could be admirable. The fact that he is humanized is great. So for the cover I decided to give him a determined stare right to the view. To have him locked in right with you, so that you know he is infinitely pissed and wants revenge. Subtly was the key in this piece. I have to make correction after todays crit but I will surely share the revamped finish next week.

This guy, this was originally going to be a piece where a child was being baited by a zebra doll so that this creature could eat him. My teacher thought of having the striping being ripped off instead. I liked it so ran with the idea and then elevated it a bit. As I was adding texture and flavor to this guy I questioned myself "Why is he stealing the stripes? What purpose could he have for them?" The answer?: He wants to be a zebra. If you look at the top he is WEARING THEM! Stealing the stripes so he can be a zebra, thats all he wants. He's like a alien furry... oh god.... furries.

More updates on the way. I have concept art that will be worked on in the next month and a half and some skateboard designs. Maybe even some design work like poster designs. All on the way!

Various things

So i've been busy with the first month of school. I wanted to post and announce a few things that are coming up and that have happened already.

As for things that have happened, i just wanted to show two posters I did last semester for my communication work shop class. 1 was actually picked for a show at school and is currently all over the school :)

In addition to this, i'm also working on pieces for school AND a fine art show. I want to show more of that as it moves along. I'm working on the fine sketch for my first creature this weekend, so excited! Still need models for that so let me know.

first post in awhile

so it turns out 5 studio classes and 30 hours at a retail job may be a bad idea. I'm cutting back next semester. I only have 3 pieces I'm proud of this semester. One of them being the last headdress piece I posted (Felchie, my muse, was what inspired me to make it so good. She is incredible!)

So I've had this idea for a westward expansion/steampunk idea for a few months and am doing some illustrations and writing a story about it (if anyone wants to collaborate I''ll be more than happy to share credit). Anyway these are the first sketches of the piece I'm doing for break. More to come this weekend.

working on the final drawing/piece

soooo this is working on the final version. I only developed the smoke stacks and tesla coils so far. I will try to add at least the steam engine component tomorrow.

oh and here's my gingerbread man piece for my illustration methods class. It has to do with my fear of food with faces (gingerbread men, cakes with the photo icing stuff, chocolate molded lolly pops with faces like santa etc.). Like if i see them in a story  I don't care. Try to eat one though.... ewwwwwwwwww. It's like cannabalism idk lol. I know they aren't really alice but its just disturbing on an intellectual level. Anyway heres the drawing for it. It's made with graphite, watercolor, gouache, marker and white out.

headdress no. 11

Sooooo i totally just started some new pieces for class. My teacher loved the concepts, especially the headdress piece. Its based on the industrial revolution and involves elements of Tesla's machines, steam power and smoke stacks and architecture of the time. The beautiful girl in I used as reference was my muse Felchie. I really enjoyed working with her and will continue to for as long as she can stand me :P
